Hmmm...the voodoo doll is a holywood creation , based on a statue that one would see in african villages. The statue was carved from wood and had nails hammered into it as an offering to the Ogun (the orisha of iron , also seen a a protector of sorts). This statue worked as a protection blessing for the village. As for using voodoo to bring harm to others, they have the same three-fold law as the wiccans do ( if you cast a spell to get someone hit with a bus, you better be EXTRA careful when crossing the street....LOL).
As for the religeon itself, they believe in one god. Seven orisha (elemental spirits of sorts) that are said to be there to watch over the human race (according to the christians, there are seven choirs of angels) , and they believe in demons that they don't see as evil so much as being there to put obstacles in front of the human race.....the kicker is the fact that the king of these demons is also an orisha (the most beloved of them all , in fact)....the similarities in voodoo and christianity are INCREDIBLE to me.
