View Full Version : Character Evolution

I believe something that would make a huge impression with the masses is obviously going to be character development and creation.
Something that I, and I'm assuming many others, would like to see is a realistic intuitive Character Evolution process instead of just the simple creation.
There were a few aspecs from other games of the past that individually I thought was really nice and wanted to see more of, however it just has never happened.
- Character Aging (based on either character level, time played on character, both, or story quest development)
- Physical Attributes afflicted by player choices. (This is something that I've seen start to happen in the Single Player games but not in multiplayer. The actions of the player affect the personal Karma/Balance of that personified individual as well as certain quests, depending on it's execution, leaving battle scars on them)
- The near impossibility of making the EXACT SAME appearance of a character the same as another cause they thought you looked cool. (People copying your character design is something I've always hated)
This versatility could also be applied on the character class/job development as well, so as to make duplicating that characters abilities and appearance would be more difficult. (If it's one thing that I think tends to take away from games, it's Character Builds... "Oh if you choose this then this and this, then you'll have the BEST combination in the game!" Why not make it harder to create a character build, by making the character development less linear?)
I've got more in the back of my mind I'll add later.

Something just struck me... "damn ball" ... Why not tie more stuff from the web into the characters themselves. You've got the +/- Karma, why not have that affect their characters. It would promote several idealisms and made moderation of the board even easier. Atleast for users wanting to be Angel characters. Make their +/- Karma from the forums transpose into certain bonuses/drawbacks for their character.
There are a lot of possibilities. I have always liked being able to affect my character not only by being logged into the visual UI, but also by being able to manage certain things from a remote web page. Such as for the economy aspect (which happens all the time) be able to set up a shop via your webpage using the inventory of one of your characters and when the item sells, it removes the monetary amount from the buying character and transfers it to yours. That way it alleviates the stress on the UI servers from users spamming "SELLING> BIG THING I'LL NEVER NEED BUT MAYBE YOU'LL BUY IT FOR 200mill" and promote the community of the web to still be able to play while stuck at the office without getting nabbed for obviously having a UI game open.

Good post. We are implementing extremely immersive character and game play systems during development that will no doubt put a smile on your face ;D

Glad to hear that! I'll keep posting things as they pop up and hope that at the least you can walk away with a thought like: "interesting..."

This has always been something that has nagged me. Something that still draws in tabletop gamers is the ability to visualize your character however you want, but that your character Always appears and Acts different than everyone else. Why not have a MMORPG that has the same basic principle.
Characters that learn from other characters. I mean if I see you do a physical move, I can always try it myself can't I? I may not be as good as you but there should be nothing stopping me from attempting to "Mimic" or "Imitate" your motion. Make it my own. It's the human experience which seems to be lost from the online game with "cookie cutter characters".

Not so much in regards to character development, but rather player input, I like the following idea from the FAQ of the in-development MMO Pirates of the Burning Sea (http://www.flyinglab.com/pirates/faq.php).
you can create your own flag and sail graphics. Here on our website you'll find our innovative peer-reviewed player content submission system, through which you can submit your flag and sail designs for other players to vote on. The best ones go into the game, where you can use them on your ship and sell copies of them to other sea captains. In future releases we'll be looking at ways to expand the player-created art in our game.

Tying karma to your character is nice.
But race is not interchangeable so far as far as i can tell
You choose a race and stick to it until the bitter end :)
Pirate of the burning sea
That was a game i was keeping tabs on too.
Each ship have like 2 million poly lol

You will be pleasantly surprised when the time is right my friend. I'm grinding my teeth trying not to type down whats in store, but as Robert said.... we will no doubt but a smile in your face. EAR TO EAR!

For every post i read I'm getting more and more intrigued,.i like the suggestion Darkiran had made about having it so you can have your own individual look for your character, and age/battle scars would be pretty cool,..as long as there isn't really a life line to hold onto,..i can't remember the game i played in the past, but it had sorta a certain amount of time you can play on your character(offline game) around 1000 years(about 1 year of gameplay) until your character actually became deceased. Which I'm sure wouldn't be the case in this game.
And the fact that your grinding your teeth trying not to tell us whats instore for us makes me grind my teeth trying to imagine and i like that ;D,..its been awhile since Ive read or heard ideas for a game that make me think,..most MMORPGs out there are either like another or made so messed up there really no base to it.But i can see this game will go far beyond my expectations of other games.I plan to be here for the whole time,..so ill try to get the old brain fired up with some ideas Ive been wanting to suggest and lay them out for you as they come along.

So for Al'gar.....the more of an A** I am on the forums, the better I would be in the game?
Dont think that would bode well for the community or forums.
I also am not a big fan of selling items while not in game. Simply dont have a global channel for people to spam in. Rather the "global channel" is for the area you are currently in only. This makes people travel about the world to sell and buy goods, instead of that whole, I am in XXX, come here to pick up.
A good example of this is the auction houses in Horizons and being able to build your own shops. I could probably deal with, if you built your own store in game, that opening up you having your own webpage as well attached to the forums or some such.

I would be cool if you owned a store in-game and you could access it online so you wouldn't necessarily have to be playing the game to sell stuff if that's what you want to do. And if your parents make you get off and do homework or something, you open up your shop in a different window and tell them it's a chart for something for school.

I love this idea! My parents would totally go for it too. =) I doubt it will be possible though.

Darkfall Online released a fair bit of info at the end of last year. Looks like they're also allowing clans to contribute to the gameworld ... building a sense of ownership
Clan leaders will be able to upload their appropriate clan images, which are used on banners and flags in the clan city, and on battle standards worn on the character's back, much like the samurai did in feudal Japan. When assessing another character, you can see his clan affiliation and rank.

That looks nice TBH
Yeah, my guild and I have been awaiting darkfall's release for years now. Here's to hoping clan beta opens soon. Then again, who knows when that might happen =P

oh oh oh someone else mentioned CoX for the character creation. Damn.. that was my idea... lol anywho I was gonna mention that CoH so far imo had the best character creation. Now with that said i want Kaos War to be that. Please? Basicly the idea of making entirely radical toons and never having the same look persé would be the best. Cause I've been playing this game called Talisman Online and aside from the gender specific classes (which sucks by the way) and the generic looks its not a bad game but everyone and their mother looks the same. i can't tell one tamer from the next they all have the same look. Which is really annoying. i don't want to look like you. I'm sorry but I want something that gives me more of a feeling that I'm apart of the game and not just the person who is moving a mouse and pushing some keys. Maybe something like a Smackdown vs. Raw sort of creation where you can adjust your height and size and maybe even make your hair longer or shorter. Be able to change your hair color to be something other then black, white, and brown. Maybe toss in orange or have a hex scale that alows you to modify the colors to your own will. That would be nice. Oh the dreams of having my long beautiful orange hair in a game where I can smash the mobs face in. O the dreams.

We were told there is Strength vs Dexterity and Agility vs Constitution. Maybe I misplaced Dexterity and Agility, but well.
Unless the following is represented by the above there could be:
- Small vs Big - Hard to hit vs Toughness
- Light vs Heavy - fast movement vs physical might
Now that I look at it, it does seem agi vs con and str vs dex, oh well xD

Would be interesting to have your visual atributes actualy have an effect in gameplay
for instance If my algar has perticulaly long fingernails thay could be deemed as claws and grant me some kinda slash attack. It could be something that your character evolves over time. e.g. the more savage and brutal I am the more savage and brutal I apear. I may develope a hanch and revert to running on all fours like a raving warewolf when im running at speed.
I think its been metioned that deva will gain the ability to fly further and further distances the more the progress with their charecter
It maybe an idea to allow this to happen only if they actualy partake in the activity of flying and their wings could grow and grow with the further progress of this ability

The other day I was playing a game called oblivion when I made a character I realized how creative you could get because instead of having choices like face1 face2 and so on like in most games .Oblivion had sliders for just about everything chin, forehead, cheeks, lips, eye size and stuff like that. If something like that could be put into this game it would make characters look unique because the only restrictions would be your creativity. It would give characters sort of a one in a million look.

PWI has a character costomozation like that, unfortunately I couldn't stand the gameplay and later on you practically need the cash shop to grind past lv 75 effectively.
