Update 3/7/08

Thanks for your patience everyone. GDC was really busy for the Kaos Crew and we have made significant progress on Kaos War. We have a 2 week window before we launch something huge for the face of the game. A few things we are working on right now are.

1. Solidifying combat and gameplay.

2. Graphics testing (making sure your FPS is solid) and learning what type graphics cards and CPU's run Kaos the best.

3. Building massive amounts of targeted content.

4. Streamlining our development process and building tools to meet the content challenges that lie ahead. You can never have enough tools for the people making the game. It makes their jobs easier and makes the game more manageable.

Again thanks for the patience and we will try and update you as much as possible in the near future. FOR THE KAOS LEGIONS!

I've made two forums in my life, and three websites. Two flopped (I really didn't like freewebs) and one was pretty good. The forums were active for a few months and didn't die quickly. The websites, I used mainly html for, but I used a bit of php for the forums, though I'm not fluent at it. I'm willing to help if you need some for the fansite.

April 1st is the CTIA Wireless 2008 show. I'm all about new gadgets, excited to see what rolls out on the 1st-3rd. Especially on the 3rd the FCC's gag order on the 700mhz spectrum lifts, so we get to hear what is going to happen with that from Verizon and AT&T.

I just encourage you to be extremely careful when you throw out a date and remember that you are only as good as your word to your customers.

In a year or two when you've got that content update coming and you say it will be uploading on the 30th, you had better be uploading it on the 30th or you are going to have a lot of upset players.

We are all excited about this project and so we're a lot more forgiving than others will be in the future.

Thank you Tyen. Like I said, I'm not really upset about it, its just a new website. Its not like I'm playing the game and its somehow interrupting my gameplay. But I just wanted to say what probably most of us were thinking in the hopes that there won't be any doubts about timeliness in the future.

But hey, just keep us informed :) (which you just did)
Its easier for players to say "oh thats ok that the update was 2 days late" if they know that you were fixing/improving a few last things than if you offered no explanation.

<shrug> No plan survives contact with the enemy. In the real world people/businesses/organisations/nations fail to make milestones all the time.

It's a balancing act between wanting to get info out - which we've all been clamoring for - and the risk of stuff going wrong. Personally, I prefer the first - a risk management approach.

The trick, imo, is to announce any delay - before the deadline passes, give the reasons why, and give the upside. You only have to look at how Mythic handled the WAR delay for an example.

The main site is pretty damn awesome compared to the forums. Took me 3 hours to create this Vbulletin style, lol.

We are trying our hardest to coordinate with different people to get information out to you guys, plus the new style on the main page. To help put it in perspective there are a lot of people we have to coordinate with in order to get information out. In the future it will be much quicker but I hate holding info back from you guys as I'm an avid gamer myself and understand how it feels.

look fool, they need to travel to pitch the game to publishers and investors, or to get publicity at gaming conventions. And to do that it costs money as you so uncannily observed. And as for updates there have been lots of screens and the sort posted on the forums, and incase you didnt notice on the home page or the thread you posted on, there is going to be a massive update coming, there will be a new site with loads of features and more than one video to be released soon. Not to mention that they have an early alpha client up and running, which is a phenomenal achievement in such a short space of time.

Also about the money, in the early development of this game, Damon, and no doubt many of there crewage were putting all of their wages into making kaos war, a person even went homeless, for 2 weeks! Im glad that the team have the ability and money to travel abroad, its a sign to us that they're in a more comfortable economy position.

So hush your gums and keep your idiotic assumptions to yourself.

Wow, way to be a jerk. Normally I greet new people on the forums but I don't think you're worthy of it. If you come to check out a game and aren't pleased with what you see or are too lazy to search around for some info (as I suspect is the case with you) keep your comments to yourself. Come back later if you might still be interested. The home page does say that there is a pretty big update on the way, so be patient and wait like the rest of us. There's only so much they can show off at this time. Be happy with what the slip to us every now and then.

You have to travel to meet with publishers/investors. They don't just come knocking at your door.

The lack of info during development can be frustrating. I've mentioned the need to keep the site updated in a few posts myself. What you have to remember is that there is a business side to these decisions:

1. Don't show off your IP in the formative stages when it could be used as 'inspiration' by others,
2. Don't show off material before its polished enough to give a good impression of the final product (anyone else remember the atrocious Guild wars first screenies?)
3. Don't reveal all your planned concepts when you're not sure what will make it into release
4. Pace your releases so that information engages your community over time.

I suggest you check back now and again, and you'll see the game develop. Just remember that there'll be ups and downs.

I smell a normal game early in the dev cycle.

I think the time you guys have taken to get things this far is outstanding and impressive, I mean look at blizzard.. a whole company of guys and they still take at least two - three years minimum to put out a title...

Same reasoning my guild has playing Perfect World. We are not strong enough to conquer a land from one of the lead dominating guilds, so we are waiting until we are ready to make a good first impression...Which will be awhile but when it does occur it will be sweet victory, and we shall be feared by all. legend.. you are refering to other larger companies with games actually produced. They have the money and the support already established (fan base, money, ect.) Kaos War is SRI's flagship title.. this title will establish not only what other games SRI may create in the future, it also establishes wether SRI will create games in the future... also, it will give their publisher more confidence in SRI's abilities.

You say it is not like the old days, but in a way it is... this company is starting from scratch to create a title.. like a lot of small companies did back in the day... *sigh* in this age where the majority of game titles are created by large companies...

p.s. i am not sure on the status of the legality of Kaos War (on the lines of whether they have copy writed their material, all that legal nonsence and boring stuff) Did i hear they are still shopping for a publisher? things have gone back and forth on that subject, so anyways, that is why i am sure we haven't seen a lot of material yet... (larger) game companies are merciless when it comes to game ideas and they will "take" ideas that other companies are going for.. as they say, business is business.

If it helps , I m pretty good in MS paint and MS Front Page , when I saw pretty good , I mean you can mostly tell the bitmap looks like a stick figure , and not a bunch of lines.

Have you all thought about using one of the templates like the free to play sites do. Just splashing a half naked elf on the front page improves the class of the joint by 50%!

I love how you guys talk as if you know anything about developing a game. I have my own successful studio so please don't talk down to me. First off, if they really wanted to be successful, they wouldn't be making an MMO. How do you approach an investor/publisher with no history as a team? You can create as many concepts as you want and the coolest tech demo, it wont matter.

We outsourced our main page design to a Sr. Web design guy that does it for a living. We wanted to be sure the main page blew people away.

Well, he neglected to finish the site when it was expected so now we are piecing things together trying to get it up and running as soon as possible. There is no set date but we are trying to finish it as soon as possible.

It's just a bump in the road, don't let it discourage you. We are not happy with this as much as you guys are, as this portrays us rather than the person who was contracted to do it.

If you remove the insults and negativity, you actually can gather quite a few good points.
And insulting him in return really doesn't do much good.

He has good points about experience and the risk of trying an MMO first.

But its not like none of us did't already know that. SRI is clearly trying to do something new in an unusual way. For their sake, and for the sake of the game industry, I hope they succeed.
Problem is, you can't judge an unusual project by the usual means. It doesn't have the same standard to compare to because it is explicitly trying to throw out the old model.

Maybe it will turn out like he says, but maybe SRI will pull it off. We can all hope and try to support success, regardless of the likelihood.
