View Full Version : Gear Models

It is common knowledge that in WoW, a cloth wearer looks bigger than most Plate wearers.
Why? Because, apart from the shoulders, some bracers, and some leg-guards, it is all just a texture skin over the character base model.
And since we expect armour to be thicker than cloth, we end up having the sensation that warlock is actually bigger than the next warrior or paladin...
Anyway, hopefully armour will have thickness, rather than just be a different skin over the character.
I go more along the lines of Cabal Online, Lineage II and perhaps Guild Wars where it comes to the way gear is handled.
And also, in WoW, for the first 40 levels or so, all gear (weapons, etc) is largely similar and unimpressive.
Like the first 14 different bows are basically the same wood model with a minor color change here or there.
Ofcourse the top gear should be the most impressive, but I hope that doesn't mean the starter gear has to be horrible.
Thanks in advance.

Holy crap the low level gear in lots of games looks like utter crap. I figure this makes the player feel more accomplished when they finally receive armor that isn't laughable. I Personally feel that armor should definitely have as high a polygon count as possible, kinda tired of mere texture changes.

This was one area LotRO did a great job it. Lots of variety in drops as well as rewards even for low and mid levels. If anything failed at the higher levels.
But I agree with the whole thickness thing. LotRO didn't do giant weapons or armor but the difference between light and heavy was easy to see.

Armor has always been an off point for me in most mmos, so i have to agree with yall there. I've played most mmos, though i did avoid WoW for the most part so i am not too sure on the armor you are talking about but i can get a fairly solid idea.
FFXI was pretty much the same way in terms of lower lvl armor looking bland and very similar and that was always a turn off but made up for it with solid game play i felt; hopefully this game will be more unique (and its looking to be that way :D) in the way that it handles those issues.
Don't get me wrong though, im not saying give the lower lvl toons amazing looking armor off the bat, just don't re color the same few sets multiple times for the first half of the game and i am a happy camper.
I do wholeheartedly agree that armor should have correct thickness / proportions for the types of materials. It is rather annoying to be wearing some type of thick armor that look very thin and rather unimpressive while thin cloth armor is bulkier and more impressive looking.
This doesn't seem to be too big of a problem so far though. From what i can tell from released screenshots, the gear is going to be very impressive in appearance. I like what ive seen so far

It is not unconceivable that a few sets have similar design but made out of different materials.
But that is if it makes sense... like sets from a certain Militia or a certain Crafter's trademark design - Perhaps with a different finish here and there to distinguish between qualities.

I went from WoW to Cabal Online wow what a difference in armor. And besides the plate in WoW looked like it was molded to the guy. Who in thier right mind would think of a piece of plate weighing i dont know 10lbs moving up and down like its your diaphragm. Horrible. But as the new videos show its not that bad, looks really cool.

I always thought in WoW when adding gems and enchantments to armor should of had engravings or Sig's for the crafter ,enchanter as well as inlaid gems within the armor depending on the attached gem's.
