View Full Version : Character Name Features

I posted this within a topic elsewhere, but it is best fit here as a suggestion.

Some features I'd like to see in Kaoswar, regarding names:
- Surname (assuming the default name is First Name) - alike Guild Wars, it also helps make your name unique.
It is very likely, commonly speaking, to have several individuals with same first name or same surname, but difficult to have both.

- Nickname - similar to Titles in Guild Wars, but varying with the Race your character belongs to, and another way to reward your character's morale.
Example: Xamaen (name) the Blueblood (nickname)
Again, these nicknames would show up as you developped your character, reflecting what you did/can do.

- Title - Warfare accomplishments or PvP accomplishments reward by defining your importance in the society, by ranking you.
Examples: Overlord Oban Raggrath the Destroyer (title>first name>surname>nickname)

- Options of display - to choose whether you want to display Surname, First Name or both; Nickname or no; Title or no.

From my standpoint EQ1 had an amazing way of showing titles. Not everyone had one and it was very rare to see players with the titles. This made them so awesome to have.

Games like Vanguard, Tabula Rasa, EQ2, etc have titles thrown at you all the time and I feel like it totally kills the worth of these special titles. We still haven't come up with what will be set in stone about the naming features so it could go any number of different ways.

Titles and nicknames would be obtained through great recognition of an overal behavior in war.

Indeed it's quite unrewarding to get a title by just "beating dungeon X" like in Tabula RAsa, or something... or after killing 100.000 mobs... or after a couple of "Battlegrounds" in earlier WoW PvP

I go for a good, difficult rewarding system, but at the same time, I go against a "reputation/title/nickname" grinding policy like there is in WoW.

More about meeting certain objectives according to the amount of time devoted to playing.

A good, working system might include having certain fixed number of "rank" positions for each rank (title).
This number of positions per rank would be proportionate to the server population within that given race/faction.
This way players would be trying to get promoted, at the cost of others getting demoted. - even to the point of creating envy among members of the same race, since you (who got demoted) would have an idea of who took your place.

Furthermore, if there was a way to link the "recognition system" to the amount of time played by an account, it would make things less frustrating to more casual players.
Perhaps something like you being awarded a certain amount of "points" depending on your actions within your playtime, as long as you met some minimum requirements or something.
So "absent" players would get penalized, but devoted-yet-casual players would not.

I would like to see you get High Warlord after a couple of battlegrounds ;).

Back in the good old WoW days, having a High Warlord or Grand Marshal title, you where either respected, or called a no-lifer, either way getting to that point was crazy hard, and seeing a person in PvP with the tag "High Warlord" made you run like crazy. ^^

Yes, but scout was kinda like... easy... Too easy even. Even Sargeant.

Bah, been a while. And don't care anymore.

My point is, don't make it easier to get even the lowest of ranks obtainable.

You start as something, and need to actually work to get the next something, and if you are lazy, someone will take your place.

At the same time, though, I think giving no-lifers a reason to have no life isn't too good either.
Ofcourse, the game isn't meant to educate people, it's their own responsibility (or their parents') but to the average game population that has a life it isn't that nice in comparison.

So if the system was done in a way where as long as you play a few hours a week, and fulfill some objectives within that time, you're decently well rated, but if you play all week long, you aren't necessarilly proportionately more well rated.

I mean like a Logaritmical curve. X contribution would mean Y recognition. 4 times X contribution would mean like 2 times Y recognition. And so forth.

This way, have fun, fulfill objectives, and have a life.

What i'd want to see is a set of titles for each race that a person earns

from private amz to general amz, ofcourse abit more fantasy-y like warlord or sommat, it would really highten your sense of involvement in the game and would actually make you feel so good to walk into a room and every1 looking up to you :p Especially if your having a pvp battle and your the highest ranked in your group so you lead, its would be great.

I would love to see myself in the kaos world walking around
and then i walk into a room and everones like
Minor Peasant Nurvus
:o
Grass Farmer Trast
Warlord Amz
>:D

and then ill jus be like OH YEAH! and think im all (ment to be a cool smiley here, but nooo! theres a smiley limit)
and nyway i reckon title+name combination would be a great idea, and make it so that its not neccaserily level and stats that determin it, so that even a mid level can achieve a high rank if he does the right things

What i put in ze other thread, this to thread thing is complicated (toungue pokey outey smilley here) and Tyen the avatar is wicked

I think it would be good to add a surname as its really anoying to type in a username that you use for many games to find out that its already taken. It also lets you use a common first name like Andy or Pete that many people would want to use, and then add a surname to make it unique.

I am entirely in accord with Nurvus, the game is a game and if we wanted it how much more similar to the reality obvious that each effort that we do for reaching a destination also asks for sacrifice. Why to make the easy things if then the players complain him that a certain level reached then there is not anything to be done? There is a time for everything, for the game and for the true life and to dose both would be preferable.

I support the original post fully. It would be great with some rare titles and nicknames.

Surnames are helpful as they allow a user to be unique ( a little bit, but every bit counts), but what if there were a few too many names on a screen (It's happened before in a different game for me, I got seriously confused). How about an option to show or hide surnames too? For the simple minded folks like me.

As long as nobody steals achewyrock I'll be fine. Who thinks of something like that anyway?... I should be fine. It would be nice to be able to reserve names with pre-orders or something.
