Hey all, was wondering if someone could answer a couple of questions I had regarding combat mechanics in Kaos War.

Firstly as I understand it, Kaos War will be a fps style mmo, so which if any game currently on the market would you say the combat mechanics were most similar to?

Secondly I noticed mention of swords and guns being available ingame and with that in mind, I was wondering if there were any combat mechanics planned ingame to avoid melee fighters simply being kited and standing no chance vs ranged users.

Many thanks,

Ryle

Hi Ryle. Thank you for your post. First, Kaos War is a 3rd person perspective action game. This was chosen for many reasons. For instance, the ability to do combat and actually see opponents in a 360 degree way. There currently is not a game on the market like KW, we believe this fun system is smooth and revolutionary for an MMO.

For your second question that is a Yes on your count. We will not allow for such tactics to be an "easy win" for ranged type characters to simply Kite around melee combatants. Melee characters will be armed with many abilities to close the distance. Since our combat system is very free form, player skill handles most outcomes. I am sorry for the late reply, we have been so busy crunching.

Speaking of Combat Questions...

If there's a Hunter Class, is it going to have the system WOW used? When a monster gets near you, you need to change to a Melee Weapon to attack? because i really found that annoying yet, it really made sense why they did that making it more realistic :P

Although Kaos War doesn't have a fixed set of classes, but instead depends on your own choices when it comes to what gear you use and which things you do in order to develop and specialize your character.

That said you could create for example a human long range combat character, say by specializing towards use of assault rifle type weapons (like the Storm MK2 Assault Rifle). With a character like that you'd have to keep your distance, to put it bluntly, if you let a skilled warrior get into melee range with say a sword, you're probably finished. Getting cut up in close range with a sword makes short work of your character, the first strike, as you can imagine, would already knock your rifle/arm to the side, leaving you open to continued attack and practicaly unable to hit the opponent with your rifle until you get out of melee combat.

Ofcourse if you where expecting short range combat you could have brought a pair of XaoTech Handguns, allowing for faster manouvering and aiming, atleast giving you a good chance to get some shots off whilst dodging melee attacks. ;D

A question about the combat system: you said it is going to involve skill. I assume this means no standing in the same place and swinging a sword ( like GW). Will we be able to manually aim our guns/melle weapons, or do you mean that it takes skill in the sense that you need to use hit & run techniques?

From the Game Information - Gameplay section

Kaos War is played from a 3rd person perspective, with a 3rd person action controls. Unlike most MMO games Kaos War delivers realtime action allowing the player to direct his weapons or powers in combat.

And Loren has said in a FP yesterday that

pvp and pve combat involves full freedom of movement such as dodging, jumping and even flying incase you're a Deva.

So combat will apparently involve an element of twitch skills in both offence and defence.

... bajonets. Just a though,t but in a world of swordfight they would probaböy still be in use. Well would be cool if a game allows such a Hybrid weapon.

I would expect there to be a large amount of weapons that are... unconventional... so to speak... ;)
