View Full Version : Soloing in Kaos War ?
Hello, I wanted to point you to an article on Scott Miller's blog (CEO of 3dRealms) which I just came across. It made me think of the Kaos War team's efforts and since I have enjoyed the video series about you guys, I thought I'd shoot you a link, but bear in mind that I have never set foot into an MMO so I have no first hand experience with what he is talking about.
Long story short, Scott says in his blog that the main thing he enjoyed in WoW was that he had a choice of soloing all the way up and that he wasn't forced to join a group.
Article is here : http://dukenukem.typepad.com/game_matters/2006/07/the_real_secret.html .
What's Kaos War's design on that ?
p.s.: sorry if this has been discussed before. Ignore this thread if it has...

I agree also, imo grouping should be a choice, not forced upon you.
Nothing is more frustrating for someone that doesn't have a lot of time (work/school/family, etc) only to hop onto a game and then spending 30 minutes getting together a group, another 30 getting where you need to be and then 10 minutes of actually playing before someone has to leave for "x" reason or your time is up.
This vgcats comic sums it up for me :p:

That's not to say i don't like grouping, as I do, I just wish it was treated more as a "choice" instead of saying "ok you must group most of the game."

Well it could go both ways IMHO, some might not like the idea but some don't mind it either. Take a look at FFXI, it forces you to group on lvl12+ and it's actually doing fairly good. As for me, well I certainly don't mind it, infact I .do enjoy grouping with some friends and lvl up more than I do soloing, but that's just me.

We won't force you to group, you can "skill up" your entire trees without joining a group and do some amazing encounters as well. But to do some of the epic boss fights you must do so with a team, and a well oiled one at that! There are some awesome features to help you feel apart of a team, where you are not the weakest link.
Besides our bosses so fricking amazing you wont want to miss them. ;D

Good to know! ;D Though as long as I get to beat a bunch of guys' asses I'll be happy.

By "boss" I assume you mean some huge, strong creature-type thing that your party accidently stumbles upon while adventuring out into the wilderness? Or will they be thrown at you as part of the story line?
What I'm asking is: Do you have to fight these "bosses" if you don't want to?

You do not have to fight them if you do not want to except in some events we have planned. It is also not the only way to obtain "Uber" loot. There are some boss encounters that must be cleared before your server can progress, Gate guardians if you will. but make no mistake, I love to solo. Especialy if I am playing a stealth build in Kaos. My my my will you LOVE stealthy in our game, it just makes me giddy thinking about it!

I love being stealthy.
Soloing is also a very good thing, IMO. Nobody should be forced into a group in order to progress through the game. It's hard to find a group of players that wont leave when you need them most. When they leave it makes all the time you spent working on finding them pointless. So, you spend about 20-30 mins or more finding a group and then you're out and about killing things and when you finally get to your destination, one of them decides it's now time for him to leave so he can go eat dinner. Why bother to join a group if you know you have dinner coming up in a few mins? So, once one guy leaves the others are all like "yeah... we're screwed now" so they leave and you're back right where you started and you realise you wasted about an hour or two, with the exception of the exp. you gained from the petty monsters you might have fought.

We have the answer to this... but I can't reveal it just yet. =D
