Shocking I know, but bear with me.

I was thinking how that when I had tried out a MMO I had little knowledge about what to do and where to go to do well. This is even after reading wikis and guides. So in addition to a tutorial that a player could opt for I also think that there should be another thing for new players to get integrated into the fold.

Higher level characters occasionally find that they are in a good mood and decide to help out lower level characters somehow. For example in WoW I would take my 70 warrior and go run 4 others through the lower instances. However I think that this could be taken a few steps forward.

Characters could have the ability to write and fund their own quests and other activities they can organize to welcome newer players to Kaos War. This removes some of the gap between the newer players and the vets while also allows the newer players learn some of the finer points to a game.

In Entropia Universe, there is a "mentoring" skill bar, when a player sucessfully "mentors" another player they gain expierence in that bar. A similar reward could be given to these members of the "wecoming comitte". "leveling up" that bar could gain access to other privalages or items or other reasons to contribute to welcoming newer players other than the feeling to help out, which seems to be a rather weak incentive.

Thoughts?

Thoughts:
Rather than just running the newbies through the ranks, it'd be nice if there was exclusive content (nothing large, just an instance or two) that allowed new players to experience the best part of the game first, rather than punt some space boars. As incentive for senior players, misc. items that aren't available in the rest of the game. Not weapons or armor, but an item that provides a new appearance or a pet rock that follows the player around.

Yes its supprizing how novalty items and features can be so popular.
Warhammer online is a good example of this.
For example players regulaly visit the lowbi zones to get those tomb unlocks that they missed when they were lowbies themselfs (apparenty if you compleate a public quest whilst but naked you unlock parts of you quest tomb)
This can encourage higher level players to hang around the new players for a while who then enevitably passes down tip bits of usefull info to the newer players that the higher lvl players have learnt.
My house in EQ2 its positivly full to the brim with all the novalty items that i have collected over the years so In my opinion thay are definately appriecioated.

I'd go out of my way for a pet rock just to name it a chewy rock.

Well the Items that I had mentioned in this suggestion would be more vanity oriented or some form of trophy you could display in your house or something along that line.

As Reddo mentioned the basics should be taught in the tutorial then finish it off with something that should show how amazing it would be later on in game.
