Just thought I would open a little debate with the community to find out a little about your favorite ever MMO and why you found it to be so. So let me start :p

Favorite Current MMO:

World of Warcraft

Why:

I found World of Warcraft extremely engaging and easily accessible from the word go, although I didn't get much time to play it due to time restraints (Thanks Kaoswar ;) ) and money so I'm not so sure about lastability. The graphic style in WOW was also very typical Blizzard (I'm not a fanboy but I don't think I have not liked any of their games) and I think this was and is so successful because previously the games trying to have more realistic graphics didn't have hardware capable enough (My two cents anyway).

I'm keeping it short and sweet and I'm sure you guys will have more in depth reasons for loving certain MMO's so let us know :)

I don't have much to say lol. I am F.O.Bish when it come to the game world. Guild Wars is my first MMO that I ever played and I love it. I enjoy their awesome graphics/environment. I like the fact they have henchmen so when it takes too long to get a group together, you go off alone with NPC's. I stuck with one online game only since they are time consuming.

There was like 4 to 6 thousand people on a sever

UO - pre-3d days. PvP. Red. Red. Red.

Shadowbane. PvP with a point. (Relatively) painless levelling letting you get on with PvP. Pity about the sb.exe errors.

Currently playing WoW - because my guild does.

I personally have spent more time in the first person shooter community, and will proudly say that FarCry multiplayer took up at least 8 months of my life in clan warfare. I got my first taste of an mmorpg with Guild Wars, and after maxing my account with 4 lvl 20 characters I moved on to try RYL: Path of the Emperor. Other than the graphics and tiny community, RYL was a blast. I hesitate to call GW an mmo since it is instance based, but its still a good game. After RYL, I started EVE and WoW at the same time, and quickly ditched EVE for two reasons: I couldn't emotionally connect as well with a non-biological avatar, and all my old buddies from back in college currently play WoW so it works as a glorified chat program pretty well.

But what is my fav? That would have to be Kaos War. Why? Because of the lore, the art, the innovative engine, and the team of great people that are creating it all.

Hey all,

Thought I'd drop in and see what all the craziness was about. Damon you're mad, but I've got admire the drive. I know where you're coming from as I'm working on something myself - not an MMO or even a game, so don't panic! - but I gotta question taking it so far that it's cost you your personal life.

Anyway, my favourite MMO still is a text-based MUD called Igormud. Not because it's old skool and therefore somehow retro chic, but because there was some incredibly talented area creators who made some truly impressive places to explore. Personally, I think any new MMO designers ought to check out games like Igormud to capture some of their spark and hopefully transfer that to a 3D game.

I personally would like to see an MMO that was truly persistent where things occur whether you're playing or not. Sure you should be able to change 'destiny', but a truly great MMO would be one where you feel like you're taking part in and effecting the lives of the inhabitants, whether real people or NPCs. Simple examples from text-based MUDs I remember are a quest-based club that made you a 'protector' of a land and which meant you had item that sat in your inventory reporting events, I think it was a necklace, and the system would randomly decide whether things were occurring in the realm. Sometimes you'd be called to protect villagers from rampaging monsters and you'd get rewarded for that. Sometimes you'd just get told of market days, festivals and other events that just sprang up for an allotted time.

Without doubt, one of the cleverest things about Igor were the vampires. Someone had recreated Santa Clara (I think) from the Lost Boys films and you could become a vamp by drinking blood from a bottle and offering a suitable sacrifice. This was effectively a guild, but you had a thirst that always had to be satiated or it would begin to drain life overtime. But the clever dynamic was the fact that you could get staked by hunters, who would not exactly kill, but teleport you back to the guild cave with no health and a whole load of xp gone. You would then have a 20 minute period to 'hunt the hunter'. He or she (one of the greatest vampire hunters was a women incidentally) could stake you again if you weren't using your ability to hide in shadows, but you could bite a hunter and drain them for some of their xp and get your revenge. The trick was to work together and get as many vamps to bite the hunter in the allotted time. Imagine a hunter legging it around the world for 20 minutes being chased by packs of vampires. Needless to say it was ALOT of fun. Oh yes, if they logged off at anytime in the 20 minutes the clock would start again...

Sorry, the post is long for my first one, but this whole thing has got me thinking about MMOs again.

Welcome to the forum Nobad!!

Sounds like you have enjoyed your experiences with MUDs and I thoroughly enjoyed reading your comments. Personally speaking I have tampered with a few myself and have enjoyed my experiences and, like everyone else in the team its great to be able to glean knowledge from all genres of game including MUDs :).

Great posts from everyone keep them coming ;D

I've only played SWG and WoW but for me my favorite of the two is SWG. I'll admit its partially because I'm a Star Wars fanboy. Other reasons though are because of the graphics, character creation, and community. IMO the graphics for SWG blow WoW out of the water. I'm not a fan of the cartoony world of WoW either. The character creation for SWG is increadable. Being able to customize your character from species down to the size of their cheekbones and length of nose (if they have a nose) is one huge step in the direction of building a bond with your character. That for me creates a connection with the game. Finally when it comes down to the community it seems that SWG's community is more mature. On WoW it seems like all I saw were 12 year old kids crying "wtf" and trash talking "omg I wtfpwnd u noob. lrn2play kthxby." Not only that with SWG having the ability to make player cities really brought me close to my guildmates and gave a bigger immersion into the game.

they wanne kick all that fat concern asses 2, so maybe you and them could friend up and share some tips or what do i know:)

hi guys...

Hi and welcome to Kaos! nice tattoos, 34 is not that old really, a few of us are hovering around 30 and if I start thinking 34 is old then... oh wait I didn't think I would make it past 28... hmm as Layne Staley once sang, "We die young." However, before we die, we will create Kaos War.

Welcome! Oh how I miss UO. It is like your first love you never forget it! We are going to do many many new things with pvp and reinvigorate the "faithful" if you know what I mean. But we also want to have epic battles for players who enjoy competitive PvE, also help casuals also find a home. That also includes PVP Casuals. People who also enjoy pvp a great deal but time constricts their enjoyment.
Stick around! We take input and hope you bring also great ideas for making your passion also a reality.

Hey guys! I'm fairly inexperienced with MMO's , having only played FFXI and WoW. As for the former, LOVE the graphics , hate the fact that it's highly possible to have your ass kicked by a rabbit when starting out (if it were a monty python thing, I could almost understand....LOL). So, needless to say, I wasn't playing that one for very long (I wanted the pvp right out of the gate. It's what I have the most fun with, probably due to a youth misspent on Mortal kombat , Tekken , and Soul Caliber...LOL).
As for WoW, I DO love it. I mean, you don't do the HWL grind if you don't (granted I wish I weren't in competition with my own faction to get there, but it's never been a secret that the honor system is flawed). As for the PvE , it's fun , it's a challenge, and the boss drops make it worth the effort (I was using the Horns of Eranikus until I hit WL and got the epics.). My biggest issues right now are the inner-faction competition for rank , the fact that I have to 'raid or die' to get anything better than TUF (granted Sulfuras is ALMOST worth respeccing healbot/totem dropper for a little while), and the very idea of alli shaman / horde pallys (this I'm actually interested to see what Blizz is going to do. I personally look for pallys to fill out the support role more and more , and a buff to shammy overall dps while not touching the burst damage.....but we'll see)

My favorite MMO was Lineage 2. Why? Never experienced such intense PvP before and was very fun, it was amazing running around everywhere never knowing who can pop up or what will happen next.

I am hoping I get this experience with Kaos War.. I want to be able to run around always checking behind my shoulder just in case. I do not want a carebear game where all you can do to show who is better is by trash talk.

Ultima Online hands down( old school UO). One simple word, freedom. The game allowed you to breath and be what you wanted to be. Restrictions are a bad thing.

Same for me on UO, Pre Tram/felicua crap and basically ruined the point of open pvp.

There really are two mmo's that pulled me in, UO and Asherons call.

UO basic the game just felt open, unrestricted, and not like a huge grind. The open pvp let players play any type of character and there was no holding by the hands/forcing people to be the mr. goody two shoes. It helped strengthen the community and you know when another player had your back usually.

Not to mention the social aspect of the game. In my experience with mmo's old UO was the most social game I played. People would hold events on their own all the time and it just provided for a much more fun experience then spending all of your time killing things over and over and over.

Asherons call, why more pve oriented I loved because of their monthly updates. The world felt more alive then almost any other mmorpg. The way the story events actually had a physical impact on the game world that the players could actually see and interact with. It astonishes me that no other mmo has really went down this path sense, IMO it is one of hte best examples of why MMO's can be fun. It's sad to soee so many mmo's that could do such things but instead just focus on expansions or updates that add "new items/dungeons" instead of actually having a storyline and such to them among other things that can impact the whole world of the game and not simply "lv 50+" people or such.

Yeah its a very interesting situation with MMO's at the minute that most of them are actually, I feel, becoming less intimate with players and focusing more on combat than the social (Even though with most it is now probably easier to communicate).

We are all about community in every sense and I would like to think that we can start more movement back to the player events and involving players more in the story of Kaos War. Wouldn't it be nice to get that buzz of not knowing what will happen next when you log on, instead of knowing that all you are going to do is grind levels? Yeah the huge boss charactors are very cool but there always seems to be very little point in slaying them...

What do you guys think?

I like the idea of having lots of world events. Like when the Naxx patch came out and you had the scourge invasions in UC , I was all about that!.....would have been even better had it been a complete surprise! But, yeah, something like this on a more global scale would be awesome....in fact, I'd love to see a "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" kind of option and work with players of other factions in these kind of events.....THEN have a pvp gorefest :)

im new to the MMO world because ever since goldeneye, i cant stop playing FPS's like halo 2 and Far Cry. I barley play anything on computer and it takes a really awesome game to get me to (the last one was Age of Empires 2 back in like 2002). And it looks like Kaos War is the game to do it.

I haven't played UO for so long.. miss the old days ;P

Favorite MMO: World of Warcraft
Why: It's everything you want in an MMORPG.

But.. haven't played WOW in a month, got bored and tired =P as well all do, Currently playing this cute MMO called Trickster Online, i don't know if everyone has tried it, i wonder what damon's reaction would be tryin that game lol.

Definitely Everquest 2 :D There are a number of reasons, and even though I've taken a couple breaks from the game, whenever I start playing again I'm once again hooked. With most other MMOs I'd play, get bored, try it again maybe a month or two later and get burned out within a day or two.

Also, there are some really nice things about it:
-The (non-PvP) community is amazing. PvP servers have your typical MMO community, but the PvE servers have an amazingly mature and nice community.
-Many updates. From early on the game was getting bugs fixed, new content added, etc., which is one thing EQ2 had over WoW for a while - though from what I've heard, Blizzard has gotten more in gear now.
-Awesome devs, mods, etc. The forum mods don't act like drones, and the developers actually post on the forums, and reply to big issues. Also, you can connect with some of them even closer by the stuff they do off the game site. For example, one of the devs (Ryan "Blackguard" Schwayder) has a blog at http://www.nerfbat.com/; he posts a lot about his ideology on MMOs, his random experiences, etc. It also happens to be where I heard about Kaos War from :D Another dev (Steve "Moorgard" Danuser) has his own blog at http://www.moorgard.com/. Also has some pretty interesting write-ups on general things about MMOs.
-Graphics. This game has pretty unbeatable graphics - not to mention the alternate character models that were created when they started working on an eastern version of the game (they're a lot different, and look anime-ish). The variety is nice.
-Character creation. Lots of sliders for appearance, and they're set up well. Also the number of sliders and whatnot isn't really all that daunting - they're sorted, labelled correctly, and don't affect stuff that is seperate from what you're changing. Trying to remember which game had something similar but it was terrible to work with - TES4:Oblivion maybe?
-Gameplay variety. If you want you can solo, or you can group, or raid, w/e. You can play casually or hardcore; heck, it's even possibly to casually raid and still advance fine.
-Pretty well-balanced. There aren't any classes that are worthless. Sometimes they have to do huge changes to stuff to get it balanced, but they do it right. A recent example is they changed around a lot of control spells to give the two Enchanter classes the place they deserve, and to fix how out of control things were. If you knew what you were doing, you could pretty much chain-stun creatures; some creatures even had total immunity to stuns and whatnot to make them a challenge, which of course was mighty annoying for Enchanters.
-Arseloads of quests. Seriously, you could quest your way to the level cap without having to do many (if any) repeatable quests over and over.
-Good UI support. You can make custom UIs easily, but the Default UI actually is really nice. You have almost all of your screen space free with the current default UI (it was changed a good deal from the original one they had). That one's a big thing to me - before it was a bit cluttered, but not too bad outside of hotbar space, nothing you couldn't solve with a UI mod.

Of course it has its problems, but there aren't many:
-PvP has a few issues; though the devs have stated they're not focusing on it nearly as much as PvE, it's merely there to give the option. They actually did come up with some nice systems (IE skills can do one thing in PvE, and something different in PvP), but there are a number of balancing issues, plus the game itself was designed for PvE, so the zones themselves don't fit perfectly, things of that nature.
-Raid itemization is, from what I hear, FUBAR. I've seen a couple problems with it but I honestly don't think it's as bad as people are making it out to be - however, I'm not a raider.
-Too item-centric for my tastes. Then again, that applies to almost every MMO game out there. If I could just get NWN (Neverwinter Nights) style balance between character & item strength, I'd be all set (though it allowed for a bit too much powergaming) - I tried DDO (Dungeons & Dragons Online), but I hated the interface, and the gameplay was a bit awkward. It probably isn't too bad of a game, but it was a bit hard to get into for me. Did I mention I HATED the interface? Way too clogged... it wasn't as bad as Oblivion's interface though, that I just couldn't take for some reason.

Long post, but there's a lot to say on the subject of MMOs ;D

My longstanding favorite MMO has been EverQuest.
By far better than any other mmorpg I have played.
Right now I am especially enjoying EQ due to the launch of the progression servers (hi2u combine)
I'd comment further but I don't think anyone would read it <3

Ya know, when I think about it, I think a big thing that pulls me into MMOs is being there from some early point after release (within a few months). A game is just so much more when you've seen all the changes and everything, at least to me. That, and in the beginning is when people actually go out and explore, do quests etc, later it always ends in grinds and whatnot, and it's much less engaging to a new player. That's actually why I like the ability to solo in MMORPGs - it allows you to go out and explore the world without dragging down anyone else.

World of warcraft atm

reason:
gameplay: its SOO simple to play the game you dont need to do hard stuff etc
enviroment: everytime i walk in orgrimmar / ironforge i just feel like its gigantic walking through those gates
Player VS player: The honor system sux >.<"
Player VS enviroment: Always fun to try new encounters its always fun to hear YES WE GOT HIM on teamspeak when you down a boss for the first time.

Kaos war: will soon be my favorite MMO Al'gar ftw!

How do you guys feel about the change to SWG tho?

I hated it when I logged in only to realize they deleted every prof. I played except for 1 so I had 7 toons in need of a re-spec (cancelled all their acounts needless to say) and 1 toon that was gimped and nerfed beyond belief after the so called upgrade...

Not to mention my account was "accidently deleted" by Soe and had to regrind the toon because they could not for sure say I actually had the toon because all the info. was gone and no SOE confirmed the account wasn't hacked and the toon wasn't deleted from my computer...

The CU upgrade I got wacked because they hadn't backed the server up for 2 weeks then when they implamented the CU the server crashed and burned so they had to re-install back up files and I lost 2 weeks worth of items, credits and xp.

All the while CSR's telling me, "We're sorry for the incovinance and hope you continue to enjoy playing Star Wars Galaxies"

Needless to say I got a temp. ban after getting upset because they kept killing my charecter. Funny thing is after the ban was up I never had another problem like those listed again.

Was SWG untill they got rid of skill boxes and reduced the prof.'s from 30+ to 9.

One of the best ones I played was when I got to beta test Cabal online before they banned all US IP adresses due to licensing and it being a game for Europe. It had tons of quests with minimal grinding required. In 50 levels I only had to grind 2 levels rest was quest xp. Although in WoW I never did a single quest and was able to grind from 1-60 in less than three weeks.

CBO I believe the level cap was 150 or more and apparently has huge PvP battles but sense the beta was capped at 50 untill it went open I never got to see higher than that.

EQ1 was my favorite all time MMO. i think the reason i loved it so much was the community. The graphics and gameplay brought me in but the community kept me there for a while. The same trend can be seen in forums, if you look closly, almost all of the old members dont even talk much about the game they talk with each other.
